Nick Dotson

Nick Dotson

Project Scientist

Dr. Dotson completed a B.S. in Cell Biology and Neuroscience (2008) and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (2014) at Montana State University. His graduate work focused on the neural basis of visual short-term memory and developing large-scale microelectrode recording devices for non-human primates. As a postdoc at UC Berkeley, he studied how neural activity in the hippocampus of freely flying bats encodes nonlocal positions. His current research at the Salk aims to dissect the perceptual and oculomotor representations of moving objects using the double drift illusion and to understand the neural basis of self-motion perception in jumping marmosets.

Research Assistant I

Shelby Dunn earned her BS in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego. She is a Research Assistant I working to understand the biology of aging.

Jiakun Fu

Postdoctoral Fellow

Jiakun completed her B.A. in Neuroscience and Mathematics at Skidmore College in 2015. She then pursued her PhD at Baylor College of Medicine, where she studied center-surround interaction in mouse V1 using a deep learning approach. At the Salk, she is interested in understanding how external stimuli and the internal state of the brain interact to shape perception. She combines wide-field voltage imaging with bistable perceptual paradigm to study the neural mechanism underlying perceptual decision making.

Sally Ganley

Research Administrative Assistant III

Sally Ganley is a Research Administrative Assistant III. She has been at the Salk Institute since June 2006, and she joined the Reynolds lab in July 2014.

Courtney Glavis-Bloom

Senior Staff Scientist

Courtney Glavis-Bloom, Ph.D. graduated with a B.A. in Cognitive Science in 2004 from Yale University. In 2010, she earned her Ph.D. in Psychology: Neuroscience and Animal Behavior from Emory University, where she studied the effects of neonatal damage to the hippocampus on spatial and contextual memory. She then spent 8 years in the pharmaceutical industry where she evaluated the effectiveness of pro-cognitive drugs. Courtney’s research at Salk is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging, the biggest risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Patrick Jendritza

Postdoctoral Fellow

Patrick Jendritza obtained his B.S. in Biosciences from the University of Heidelberg in 2014. He then pursued a Ph.D. as part of the International Max Planck Research School for Neural Circuits at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience in Frankfurt, where he conducted research on the visual cortex of marmosets using multi-area recordings and optogenetics. His current research at the Salk aims to understand how the brain integrates information about stimulus location and identity to create object representations that remain stable across eye movements.

Blake Mitchell

Postdoctoral Fellow

Blake Mitchell earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Memphis and an M.A. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Tennessee, before completing a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University. During their Ph.D., Blake studied how the brain processes information from both eyes to create a single, unified image, focusing on how the visual cortex adjusts its activity in response to binocular input. Now, as a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute, Blake co-leads a project with Jiakun Fu, researching the neural underpinnings of intrinsically generated traveling brain waves. Using a multi-modal approach that combines optical imaging with electrophysiology, Blake and Jiakun aim to uncover the neural substrate responsible for wave phenomena and how these waves influence perception and behavior.
